Moonrise on Karwa Chauth Day - 10:59 PM

Karwa Chauth is one of the most cherished festivals observed by Hindu married women across India and abroad. Falling on the fourth day after Purnima (full moon) in the month of Kartika, it is a day of fasting, devotion, and love.

On this day, married women keep a strict fast from sunrise to moonrise, praying for the long life, prosperity, and well-being of their husbands. The fast is observed without food or even water (nirjala vrat), symbolizing complete dedication and self-discipline.

The rituals begin with sargi, an early morning meal lovingly prepared by mothers-in-law for their daughters-in-law. In the evening, women dress in traditional attire, adorn themselves with bridal ornaments, and gather for community prayers.

The Karwa (earthen pot) filled with water is worshipped along with Goddess Parvati, Lord Shiva, Lord Ganesha, and the Moon God. Once the moon rises, women break their fast after sighting the moon through a sieve and offering water to it, followed by their husbands giving them the first sip of water and food.

Karwa Chauth is not just a ritual—it is a celebration of the sacred marital bond, devotion, and mutual respect.

about ahoi ashtami

Ahoi Ashtami, observed on the eighth day (Ashtami) of the Krishna Paksha in the Kartika month, is a sacred vrat dedicated to Mata Ahoi, a compassionate form of Goddess Parvati. This vrat is primarily observed by mothers, who pray for the well-being, longevity, and prosperity of their children.

On this day, women observe a nirjala fast from dawn until the sighting of the stars in the evening. During the puja, the image of Ahoi Mata is worshipped—often drawn on a wall or depicted with her children and the Siyal (hedgehog/porcupine), which carries deep symbolic meaning. Devotees recite the Ahoi Vrat Katha, seeking forgiveness for past mistakes and invoking divine blessings for their children’s health, happiness, and future.

The fast concludes after the sighting of the stars (or moon, depending on tradition), with offerings of water and prayers, marking the fulfillment of the vrat.

🌺 Ahoi Ashtami beautifully reflects the selfless love of a mother, her devotion, and the spiritual importance of prayer for the family’s welfare.

Spiritual Significance

Both Karwa Chauth and Ahoi Ashtami showcase the strength of devotion, sacrifice, and prayer in family life. While Karwa Chauth strengthens the marital bond, Ahoi Ashtami blesses children with a healthy and prosperous future. Together, they reflect the eternal values of shraddha (faith), bhakti (devotion), and parivarik samriddhi (family well-being) that are central to Hindu dharma.
