Why do Hindus tie a colourful thread (kalava / mauli) on the wrist?

 It represents protection and reminds a person of prayers or promises made during a religious ceremony.

Why do Hindus apply a tilak or tika on the forehead?

 It marks the centre of focus between the eyebrows and encourages self-control, awareness, and good conduct.

Why do Hindus apply kumkum, chandan, or vibhuti differently?
